Coloured nets laying on the quays and small boats: fishing provides in Port-Vendres a typical Mediterranean setting, quite unique in the Roussillon.
Sardine is the most fished species. But all other Mediterranean fish are also represented.
Fishing is the heart of the local economy and is an integral part of the town. With over 4000 tons unloaded and sold fish, Port-Vendres is the first fishing port of the Pyrénées-Orientales. The infrastructure managed by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, includes a computerized auction sale, a specific fish unloading and delivery equipment and a fish trade hall.
Moreover the daily spectacle of the entry of the fishing boats and the fish unloading in the port is really worth a visit.
- The direct selling of the small-scale fishing takes place between 8:00 am and 10:00 am in the port at the angle of the quai Pierre Forgas.
- Around 3:30 pm, the trawlers come back to the port and come alongside the quai du Fanal.
The auction hall is not open for visitors, it’s reserved for professionals. But the
fish shop “Côte Catalane”, welcomes you in its main hall decorated with fish-tanks and a tasting counter.
