Port-Vendres and the sea : ( History )

The
Greek navigators has known Port-Vendres ( Portus Vénéris
) at 8-th century before J.C. However the history of the city begin
near 1659: after the |
treaty of
Pyrenees, the King Louis 14 asks Vauban to make of " Port-Vendres
" a naval base. Afterward, in 1838 , France is interested by the
economic relations with Africa of the North and the works of extension
and improvement is begun and allows Port-Vendres to become an important
commercial harbour. From 1885, a service of connection with passenger
ships is set up. The traffic of goods and passengers does not stop increasing
due to its geographic situation privileged with North Africa. Today the
sea is included in Port-Vendres's life because it regroups the history
and economy of a whole population. |
