From 1838, France is interested more and more in economic contacts with
Africa of the North, the works of improvement are begun allowing Port-Vendres
to become one of the important ports of the Mediterranean maritime business.
The pier is constructed, as well as the Place Castellane and" Fort
Béar". The railway stops to Port-Vendres in 1867. in 1885,
a service of connection with passenger ships is constructed. The traffic
of goods and passengers increases till the beginning by second world war.
In 1942, Port-Vendres is occupied by German. In 1944, before their departure,
the German troops blow up the port. at the end of fights, the port is
reconstructed and prospers until 1962 due to its geographic situation
privileged for maritime relations with North Africa. The rough evacuation
from the French of North Africa carries a blow fatal in the activities
