After the Treaty of Pyrenees, the activities of the port begin to develop
in Roussillon. Port-Vendres interests the king Louis 14 because this port,
quite close to Spain, is the only port in deep waters of the coast. So
after Collioure's fortifications by Vauban, " Port-Vendres "
is classified naval base. Afterward, the Marshal de Mailly under Louis's
14 orders, made to build Collioure's road. Sir of Waillly, Architect of
the king, makes the plans of the Royal Place where you can find the obelisk.
The monumental stair, the fountains, the obelisk, two places and dome,
all set up in the glory of Louis 14, are inaugurated on the eve of the
Revolution. Port-Vendres as Roussillon, will not escape at the revolution
and the Spanish invasion. spanishes finally pushed away in 1794, Port-Vendres
resumes his(her) activities. The Port takes more and more importances,
and in 1823, becomes a free and independent municipality. |
